There are no new additions to the 80+ Club members.  It was noted that Bob Armstrong and Rino Marinig will achieve this milestone before the end of 2009.

If numbers permit, we will host an “Over 80” challenge game in the 2009/10 season.

MINUTES

Connie Grosvenor read the minutes, recorded by Ray Schizkoske, of the General Meeting held on April 10, 2008.  There was one correction to the minutes.

Moved by Clayton McAlpine, seconded by Walter Hanam, that the minutes be approved as amended.  CARRIED.

FINANCIAL REPORT

Art Mousley, Treasurer, advised that our financial status has decreased by $800 over the same time last year.  We have experienced an increase in ice rental, and the cost of meals for bonspiels has increased dramatically over 2007/08.  Money has become much tighter this year, and next year doesn’t promise to be any better.  Our ice rental will likely increase again by up to 5%, and the Northern Ontario Curling Association fee will once again be $12 per member.

Ray Schizkoske stated that a letter had been sent to the Northern Ontario Curling Association asking why we have to pay dues when we basically receive nothing in return for the $12 per member that we send them.  No response has been received to date.

Moved by Ray Schizkoske, seconded by Art Mousley, that we increase the registration fee from $20 to $30 in order to cover the members’ share of the NOCA dues and our increase in ice rental.  CARRIED.

DRAW STRUCTURE

We currently have 139 paid-up members.  Draw structure for the 9:00 and 10:30 draws will remain unchanged.

Some discussion revolved around the use of members who curl at 9:00 and sign up to curl as spare at the 10:30 draw.

Moved by Ray Schizkoske, Seconded by Art Mousley, that those who wish to curl in the 10:30 draw after curling at 9:00 must pay $3.00 in order to maintain their seniority position in the Draw.  However, if they just wish to spare in the 10:30 draw, seniority will not be in effect and the spares will probably play Lead.  Spares will also fill in on a rotating basis (e.g. if two out of four spares curl one day, the other two spares would curl the next day … in other words, SHARE.)  However, if we have 47 of a possible 48 curlers (and there are two or three spares, paid or not) on the list and another person shows up late to curl at 10:30, one spare will drop out and the late person will take his/her place.

CARRIED

WEDNESDAY CURLING LEAGUE

The Wednesday league consists of a pre- and post-Christmas draw.  This is an opportunity for members to make up their own teams and curl together for the length of the draw.  Those who wish to curl on Wednesdays but do not have a team are encouraged to sign up as individuals, with the potential to be picked up as a team member.    Wednesday League curling will hopefully start on October 21, 2009 to ensure a longer pre-Christmas draw.

BONSPIELS

It was suggested that the cost of the Dusty Baker and Joe Gubbels FunSpiel be increased to cover the escalating cost of catering.  It was noted that our Dusty Baker participation was down last year, and increasing the fee would further decrease the teams involved.  With the increase in our registration from $20 to $30, it was felt that this should offset our increased costs without the need to raise Bonspiel fees.  Non-participants have to pay the cost of the meal for both bonspiels.

OTHER

Clayton McAlpine questioned an incident where a former club member came to curl three or four times in preparation for an out-of-town bonspiel.  The individual did not pay the $20 to become a member of New Horizons.  President Ray  and Art Mousley stated thee were aware of this situation.  The Club rules clearly stated that new curlers will be permitted to curl once to see if they will like the game and pay the $3 daily fee only.  However, the second time they come out to curl, they MUST pay the registration fee.

Members were reminded that the following applies to bonspiel meals:  For the Dusty Baker Bonspiel, non-participants have to pay the cost of the meal.  For the Joe Gubbels Funspiel, members do not have to pay for the closing banquet.

CLOSING

President Ray thanked all members for their cooperation and vote of confidence.  He stated he will try to do his best to keep our league running as smoothly as possible.  On behalf of the Executive, he wished all members a very healthy and enjoyable summer.  He asked members to watch for our fall opening dates in the newspapers, on the radio, and on our website.

The meeting was adjourned on a motion by Bert Gerow.
