Wednesday
Curling League:
Presentation of New Horizons Pins to
New Members
Club President Ray Schizkoske presented
New Horizons pins to our 8 new members this season (Bob Pawson, Joan Pye, Andy
Novotny, Archie Berube, Carolyn Grenier, Ron Hueston, Dennis O’Hare, and Roger
Ethier).
Over 80 Club
President Ray Schizkoske noted that the
80+ plaque has been updated. It was
noted that Jim Hall will reach this illustrious milestone this year.
If numbers permit, we will host an
“Over 80” challenge game in the 2010/11 season.
Appreciation
President Ray expressed our League’s
appreciation to Kent MacInnis for opening the club for our curling days, and
keeping the ice in excellent condition this season.
President Ray also expressed our
League’s gratitude to Tarja Bradshaw, bartender, for having the bar open when
required by our league.
President Ray also expressed gratitude
to Ray Ginglo, Drawmaster and Webmaster, for the excellent job he has done this
year.
MINUTES
Connie Grosvenor read the minutes of
the General Meeting held on April 9, 2009 .
Moved by Harvey Caron, seconded by Bert
Gerow, that the minutes be approved as presented. CARRIED.
FINANCIAL
REPORT
Art Mousley, Treasurer, indicated that
our financial situation is not bad but that our bank balance is less than last
year. He noted we are down 20 members
from last year.
Moved by Bob Third, seconded by Victor
Rinaldi, that the Financial Report be approved as presented. CARRIED.
President Ray outlined the problems our
League has experienced in the past year with an increase in our ice
rental. He also noted that effective
this year, an additional 8% MINIMUM will be added to our rent due to the
implementation of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).
The viability of our league over the
next few years will require a change in our financial structure if we are to
survive. Two suggestions were put forth:
Registration fee $30 (unchanged) and $4
for each date curled
Registration fee $40 (increase of $10)
and $3 for each date curled (unchanged)
Moved by Archie Berube, seconded by
Marilyn McAlpine, that the League registration fee remain at $30, and $4 for
each date curled.
Moved by Bob Armstrong, seconded by Bob
Third, that the League registration fee be increased to $40, and $3 for each
date curled.
Moved by Bruno Marinig, seconded by
Richard Dickson, that the League registration fee be increased to $40, and the
fee per date curled be increased to $4.
A lively discussion on the above
motions was held, with input from several members of our New Horizons Curling
League.
Vic Rinaldi mentioned that an increase
to $40 for registration would hit all curlers, including those who head South
for part of the winter.
Marilyn McAlpine asked which of the two
initial proposals would result in the best financial situation for the
league. President Ray indicated the
increase to $4 per game curled would generate three times the revenue than an
increase of $10 in the registration fee would.
Gord Warner noted that curling was
still very affordable compared to other sports such as golf, which requires a
minimum output of $500 per season.
At this point, Eric Glaister, president
of the McIntyre Curling Club, was asked to comment on the fiscal wellness of
the Club.
Eric indicated that the Club pays the
City of Timmins $7,000 per month for rent.
The Club is currently in negotiations with the City, and Eric estimates
that with the implementation of the HST the Club will be paying $8,000 per
month for rent in the coming year. A new
McIntyre Curling Club Executive will be elected on April 12, 2010, and there is
a possibility that there will be an additional increase for the Club to
bear.
Eric stated that the future of the
McIntyre Curling Club will rely heavily on the New Horizons Seniors League
remaining involved with the curling club … hopefully as members, as opposed to
us renting ice.
Joe Harwood asked Eric how the future
of the McIntyre Curling Club would be affected if the Seniors league was to
fold. Eric replied that the Club would
only be able to remain open for a maximum of five years if this were to
occur.
The three motions were presented once
again to the membership.
Archie Berube withdrew his motion of
$30 registration and $4 per game curled.
A vote was then held with a show of hands for Bob Armstrong’s motion of $40
registration fee and $3 per game curled.
A vote of 20 hands in favour was
counted.
A second vote was held with a show of
hands for Bruno Marinig’s motion of $40 registration fee and $4 per game
curled. A vote of 32 hands in favour was
counted. CARRIED.
DRAW
STRUCTURE
Draw structure for Tuesday and Thursday
curling will remain unchanged. Members
are encouraged to approach any member of Executive if they have any questions
or concerns.
WEDNESDAY
CURLING LEAGUE
A reminder to all curlers that this is
an opportunity for members to make up their own teams and curl together in a
pre-Christmas and post-Christmas draw.
Anyone without a team is encouraged to sign up as an individual and
hopefully make up a team of their own.
BONSPIELS
Dusty Baker: Members were reminded that for this bonspiel
only those who curl are invited to the meal.
Others wishing to attend must pay the cost of the meal.
President Ray also mentioned that at
the recent Roy Carroll Bonspiel in Iroquois Falls, gift cards were presented to
participants rather than hams, turkeys, etc.
He asked the members if this would be an acceptable alternative for the
Dusty Baker.
Moved by Archie Berube, seconded by
Chuck Harrison, that our League adopt the practice of giving gift certificates
to participants of the Dusty Baker Bonspiel.
CARRIED.
Joe Gubbels Funspiel: A suggestion was put forth that rather than
alternating starting times each day for this six-day event, that curlers have
an early draw for the first week, and a later draw for the second week, and
vice-versa. It was the overwhelming
consensus of those present that the draw structure and times remain as is.
ELECTIONS:
Bill Vane read the present list of
Executive members and their respective positions on the Executive. It as moved by Bob Armstrong, seconded by Jim
Hall, that the Executive remain as it presently stands. CARRIED.

participation in draws was good.
