Connie Grosvenor

1.                  Minutes of last meeting

Connie Grosvenor read the minutes of the meeting held on September 24, 2008.

Moved by Arnold St. Onge, seconded by Ray Dumoulin, that the minutes be accepted as read.                                                                                    CARRIED

2.                  Business Arising

There was no Business Arising.

3.                  Financial Report

Our current bank balance is $5,444.00.  Challenge Round:  The bus to Iroquois Falls for November 5, 2008 and fees for operating the bar at the Mac yesterday have been paid, as well as rent for our ice time to date.

4.                  Christmas Banquet

The banquet will be held on December 18, 2008, and we will request donations for the Food Bank.   There will be a 50:50 draw.  It was decided that morning coffee and Timbits are not necessary for this occasion.  Banquet guests will pay $10/meal. The last day of curling before Christmas is December 23, 2008.

5.      Challenge Round

Remaining challenge round dates are January 14, 2009 in Iroquois Falls, and February 18, 2009 at the McIntyre Arena.  To encourage more participation, it was suggested that we ‘talk it up’ with others and use word-of-mouth to generate more interest.

Regarding sign-up sheets for challenge rounds:  the procedure used in the past is that if you curled in the last challenge game, you must sign up as a spare for the next challenge game.  However, if you signed up as a spare, but ended up curling, you can sign up for the next game as a regular curler.   (This recommendation will be made at our next General Meeting in April 2009.)

6.      Wednesday Curling

Wednesday curling resumes on January 7, 2009; regular curling resumes on January 6, 2009.

7.      Joe Gubbels Memorial Fun Spiel

Information was presented regarding the format and rules for this bonspiel; we hope for increased participation, and should encourage new curlers to join in the fun.

8.      Closing Banquet/Presentations

D’Eatery will cater the closing banquet.  It was decided that coffee and Timbits will be available on the last day of the Bonspiel.

9.      Memorial Plaque

It was suggested by one of our curlers that a Memorial Plaque be erected for deceased curlers.  Discussion among Executive members present at today’s meeting decided that the Over 80 plaque for active curlers is sufficient.

10. Dusty Baker Bonspiel

This year saw the lowest registration ever for the Dusty Baker Spiel, with only 16 teams participating.  Some suggestions put forth to increase interest were to reduce the spiel to two days, or spread it out over 5 days with one game per day.   Another suggestion was that we ‘market’ the Spiel to other area curling clubs.

The current format seems to serve us well, and it was felt that perhaps the low number of participants this year was a ‘blip’ rather than a trend.   We can accommodate 24 teams for this event.

Moved by Connie Grosvenor, seconded by Rhea McKane, that we notify the clubs in Cochrane and Matheson, as well as Iroquois Falls, for the next Dusty Baker Bonspiel in November 2009.                                                                         CARRIED

11. Wednesday Curling League

There are only four teams curling in the pre-Christmas draw.  Some suggestions to increase interest in the Wednesday league are to have draws of 4 or 5 weeks only, rather than a short pre-Christmas draw and a lengthy post-Christmas draw; selecting teams by the draw system; encouraging people to sign up as individuals, and the drawmaster will make up teams for those individuals.

12. Charlie Angus letter re: funding

A letter was received from the Federal MP for Timmins-James Bay regarding available funding for Capital Assistance, Community Opportunities and Leadership Funding; and Elder Abuse Awareness.  As we are a well-established club, we do not qualify for funding in any of the above categories.

13. Other

Christmas Banquet:  In previous years we have invited past members who are no longer curling due to health reasons.  This year we will extend an invitation to Tremain Banks.  Linda Larrett, Tarja (bartender), and Kent McInnes will also be invited.

14.       Adjournment

Moved by Ray Dumoulin that the meeting be adjourned at 1:05 p.m.
