New Horizons Seniors’ Curling League

Executive Meeting

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.

at Ray Schizkoske’s Home

Present:           Ray Schizkoske, Phil Barette, Don Critchley, Ray Dumoulin,

Sheila Harrison, Rhea McKane, Art Mousley, Connie Grosvenor

Guest:  Eric Glaister, President, McIntyre Curling Club

President Ray asked that Eric Glaister be permitted to speak first.

Eric thanked the Seniors’ League for the invitation to speak at their Executive Meeting.

The McIntyre Curling Club’s financial status is sound, but any profits will be offset by the City’s increase in rent, approximately 2.5%. Plans for the 2008/09  season include the purchase of a “Nipper” to improve ice conditions, replacing some of the tables and chairs , and a new sound system.

Eric was also pleased to announce that the McIntyre Curling Club has a full executive this year.

Kent McInnes ……… ice maker

Tarja .…………. Bar

Linda Ford ………. Cleaning

Linda Larrett ……. Office manager

Eric passed out the Club calendar for the 2008/09 season.  The ice is not available for Seniors’ Curling on February 5 and 19, 2009, and March 4 and 26, 2009.

The plant will be turned on September 29th, and Eric asked for assistance from our membership once the ice is ready to be installed.  (President Ray requested assistance to phone members:  From the Membership List, Ray will call those listed on page 1, Rhea page 2, Phil Page 3, and Ray page 4.)

The issue of Association fees was discussed at length.  The Association’s position is that anyone who curls must pay the $12 fee, regardless of whether they are Club members or are renting the ice (seniors, schools, etc.)

Don and Art mentioned that one seniors club in Sudbury is refusing to pay the Association fee.  Eric will investigate the impact of New Horizons not paying the Association fee, both to our League and to the McIntyre Curling Club, and will get back to us.**

Locker rental remains at $15/year. Eric asked that the Seniors men wait until the beginning of November to request lockers.  Whenever possible, locker numbers will be assigned as in previous years.

Eric looks forward to working with the New Horizons league.  If we have any questions, we can leave a message for him at the Club.

**  In an email from Eric received September 24, 2008, he states that according to the NOCA if the Club does not submit Association fees in accordance with approximate numbers for the previous year’s membership, that club would not be permitted to host a CCA sanctioned event, nor would their members be permitted to participate in any such events.  Eric states:  “I firmly believe that in order to keep curling alive and well in Northern Ontario it should be in the best interest of clubs and all its members and leagues to support the association and be honest in submitting all numbers and fees due.  By doing so, curling in Northern Ontario will be able to survive and hopefully grow stronger.”
